It seems like transworld has established a pretty clear pattern when it comes to videos, and it goes like this: good, good, bad; good, good, bad. Feedback (classic), The Reason (classic), Modus Operandi (uhhh… classic also) but then, I.E. kinda sucked. There was good skating (pappalardo, daewon, dyrdek/caine, appleyard) but the video in general was just kind of a snoozer. Then we had Sight Unseen (classic), In Bloom (classic with the exception of Evan Hernandez and for some, Trainwreck), but then there was Free Your Mind. Despite amazing skating from Dan Drehobl, Rob Welsh and Darrell Stanton, the video was a snoozebucket. Minutes-long speeches by bums talking about the day of the hippie and quoting 50 cent? Sorta-funny skits about pro skaters driving cabs around? Gerwer is a natural-born clown and that "where’s my ghost riderrrrrrrr" line was pretty funny, but one of those two concepts would have been pushing it for a skate video with only three major parts. Cramming both the bums and taxi scenes in totally derailed it, and that montage of the expedition guys recreating Transmission 7 (another sucky TWS video) earned "Free Your Mind" the mighty "meh." But shit Drehobl’s part was nuts.
Where am I going with this? By the end of this article, I will have built an airtight case as to why George W. Bush should not only be impeached, but also put on trial for war crimes. "Subtleties" is the new Transworld vid, and the lineup is sick: Pat Duffy, who we can honestly say was doing the handrail deal when a lot of skaters today were in diapers; Biebel who’s fun to watch on or off his board; Wenning who seems to be quietly making a play for legend status; and Janoski, coming off arguably one of the best video parts put out last year in the Habitat video. Then there’s Kyle Leeper whose shorts-wearing and questionable trick selection in the Expedition video draw a collective "ummm…" from the skate population who actually know who he is.
So off we go. The Transworld filmers (who seem to rotate every couple videos, although I know Greg Hunt was at least sort-of involved with this one) seem to have learned from "Free Your Mind" and pretty much dispense with any skits or long-winded intros, which is nice. There’s a couple skate tricks and it goes right to Duffy, whose filming was apparently hindered by him smashing his arm in half on some huge south africa hubba deal, shown at the beginning of the part. His footage is still good though. He’s still got it. Some good lines, a beautifully caught b/s flip over a gap, a monster kickflip off a bump. Not as much transition stuff as I thought there’d be. His last trick was apparently used in one of those free Think videos, but it’s pretty retarded so I’m glad they included it, personally.
There’s a montage with some good stuff, most notably a short line from PJ and a ridiculous ledge trick from Ryan Gallant, then on to Biebel/Wenning. You know the deal here. Lots of manual tricks from Biebel at the pier, I heard some of them had been done before, but Biebel makes em his own either way. He’s still pushing the envelope and his last manual trick is bonkers. Wenning is still on the same mission as last year and keeps putting out ridiculous, quality footage… long lines with tricks you’ve never seen him do before, smooth style. Ba-da-ba-ba-baaa… I’m lovin it.
Then there’s another montage… I should say something about Omar Salazar here cuz that kid is back and kills shit in both montages. He got bounced from Foundation a couple years ago after some injuries but I hear he’s on Rasa Libre now so it’s good he’s being taken care of. Then it’s on to Leeper. Forget everything you know about this guy. I was amazed by this part. Let me spoil some tricks here: cab to front blunt, backside noseblunt to pop out regular in a line… fuck, I don’t even know. There’s a couple weird tricks in there that defy description. Leeper is on another level right now. He’s got some kind of natas lookalike thing going on and there’s still a couple tricks that make you go ehhhhhh, but you can’t deny this dude anymore. Just ridiculous, and I was caught completely by surprise. I don’t know if he’s still on Expedition or what, since they show him wearing a habitat shirt in the bonus footage, but somebody’s gotta turn this guy pro off this part if he’s not already.
Wrapping it up is Stefan Janoski… the tricks they show this dude doing in the intro of his part would be money shots in other pros’ sections. Anyway he’s got the total package here, lines for days, zany handrail stuff, some gaps, the obligatory what-the-fuck-was-that ledge trick, and his style is untouchable. I won’t say too much more, but take his Habitat part, and then raise everything a few notches… Janoski delivers. He skates to Modest Mouse and despite the cliché MM backlash following the success of their new record, this song’s a classic so eat a dick. Oh and the very end of the part is basically the best ending to a skate part I’ve seen in a long time. This section is now my new favorite part of the year, sorry Lucas Puig. Alright, I’ve rode Janoski’s dick enough, get this video.
